Buildings
In addition to the mansion, the estate features a handful of outbuildings.
The carriage house is a large building designed for multipurpose use. It includes stables for the horses, a milking parlor for the cows, carriage storage, and an automobile garage. Male servants, like the chauffeur and houseman, also lived in this building.
In the boathouse was once the Congdon’s 53-foot yacht, Hesperia. The rugged stone building is protected from Lake Superior by the large concrete pier.
Glensheen’s gardener lived in the gardener’s cottage. It is a smaller brick house, but originally had large heated greenhouses attached. In the greenhouses, the gardener grew flowers, roses, tropical palms, and bananas. Those greenhouses no longer stand.
