Guided tours at Glensheen offer guests the chance to explore beyond the standard visit, ask questions, and experience the mansion through new perspectives led by expert tour guides. From behind-the-scenes access to architectural details and specialty programming, there’s a tour for every kind of history lover.
NEW Architecture & Design Tours
New this summer, the Architecture & Design Tour explores how Glensheen was envisioned, designed, and built during the height of the American Gilded Age. Guests will learn about the architect, landscape designer, and interior designer who shaped the estate while discovering how Glensheen reflects revival European styles, emerging technology, and the rise of American industry.
Tours run June 5 through October 16. They are offered weekends only in June, September, and October, with daily tours available June 29 through August 30.
Lock & Key Tours
Returning May 22, Glensheen’s signature Lock & Key Tours invite guests into hidden corners of the estate rarely seen on a standard tour. This behind-the-scenes experience explores tucked-away spaces, including the upper level of the Carriage House where the historic carriages are stored. Guests will also gain a deeper understanding of the servants and staff who helped operate the expansive Congdon estate.
Tours run May 22 through October 16. They are offered weekends only in May, June, September, and October, with daily tours available June 29 through August 30.
Golden Hour Tours
Experience Glensheen in the glow of sunset during Golden Hour Tours, offered Memorial Day weekend, Friday and Saturday evenings throughout July and August, and Labor Day weekend. These guided evening tours combine stunning lakefront views with a full mansion experience, creating one of the most memorable ways to explore the estate.
Summer Programming
In addition to guided tours, guests can enjoy complimentary 10-minute educational programs offered hourly on guided tour days throughout the summer. These short programs are designed to enhance the visitor experience with fascinating stories and unique historical insights. Topics include life in Duluth in 1776, the design and construction of Glensheen, how Chester Congdon built his fortune, the lives of the estate gardeners and the Wyness family, and more.
